Dengue Update- State of Local Emergency

The Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners today declared a state of local emergency for the mosquito-borne spread of dengue fever impacting Pinellas County.

The latest report from the Florida Department of Health shows seven confirmed cases in Pinellas and 179 total confirmed cases in the Tampa Bay area.

Pinellas County Mosquito Control is ramping up efforts to treat areas of concern throughout the county. That includes crews going door-to-door and offering to assist residents in removing or treating potential mosquito breeding locations.

Those staff members will be in County uniforms with a County ID badge and will only treat your home with your approval. Please allow them to help you reduce mosquito populations and lower the risk of infection for you, your family and your community.

Residents are urged to take precautions.
• Dump out any standing water around their property once per week.
• Dress in light-colored, long-sleeved clothing with closed-toed shoes when outside.
• Defend yourself using an insect repellent with a CDC-recommended ingredient such as DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
