Library Card FAQs
I’m a South Pasadena resident, how do I get a library card?
Visit South Pasadena City Hall during normal business hours to pay the $25 fee and obtain a library card voucher. Take the voucher to the St. Pete Beach Library to have your card issued.
I don’t think I had to pay for a library card when I lived in another city, why do I have to pay as a South Pasadena resident?
The City of South Pasadena is not a member of the Pinellas County Library Cooperative (PCLC). Cities that participate in the PCLC pay annual membership fees based on population and traditionally pass this expense on to their residents as a line on their tax bill. If you previously lived in another city, it is likely that you were paying for library services through your taxes whether you used them or not.
Residents of South Pasadena do not pay in to the PCLC on their annual tax bill and only pay for a library card if they choose to use library services.
The City regularly evaluates the cost of joining the PCLC. Based on the number of library card requests that are filed with the City, the current process remains cheaper for residents rather than joining the co-op. Again, residents of South Pasadena only pay for library services if they choose to. Residents of other cities that participate in the PCLC traditionally pay for library services on their tax bill whether they used the library system or not.
How is the fee determined?
The library card fee for residents living in cities that do not participate in the PCLC is $100. This fee is annual and is set by the PCLC, not the City of South Pasadena. The City subsidizes $75 of this fee, so South Pasadena residents pay $25.
I see that after I pay the $25 fee, I have to go to the St. Pete Beach Library to get my card. Is that the only library I can use?
No. Once your card is issued at the St. Pete Beach Library, it can be used at any PCLC library. For a list of libraries, please visit the Pinellas County Library Cooperative website.
